Players and cards
Four players play in two teams of two. Partners sit opposite each other. A normal 52-card deck is dealt so everyone gets 13 cards.
Bidding
- The player after the dealer bids first; the deal moves round every hand.
- Each player bids how many tricks they expect to win, from 2 to 13.
- The two partners’ bids are added together: that is the team’s target for the hand.
Playing the tricks
- The first bidder leads the first trick. The winner of each trick leads the next one.
- Follow suit: you must play the suit that was led if you have it.
- Cutting: if you have none of that suit, you may play any card, including a spade.
- Spades are trumps: the highest spade wins the trick; with no spade, the highest card of the led suit wins.
- Leading spades: you may not start a trick with a spade while you still hold another suit. (The classic “not until spades are broken” rule is a house option.)
Scoring
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Team wins at least its bid | + the bid |
| Team wins fewer tricks than its bid | − the bid |
The first team to reach the target wins the match. The host chooses 31, 51 or a single hand.
Tips
- Count your sure tricks: aces, high spades and long spade runs.
- Remember your partner’s bid; together you only need the total.
- Run out of a short suit early so you can cut with a spade later.
