Dama (checkers) tips: 7 ways to beat your friends
4 November 2026 · Jakoz Gaming
Dama looks simple: move diagonally, jump to capture, reach the far side to crown a king. But good players win again and again because they follow a few principles. Here are seven.
1. Control the centre
Pieces in the middle of the board have more moves and support each other. Pieces on the edge have only one direction to go.
2. Keep your back row as long as you can
While your back row is filled, your opponent can't crown a king. Move those pieces last.
3. Move in pairs
A piece with a friend behind it can't be jumped. Advance in small groups instead of sending a lone piece forward.
4. Use the forced capture
Captures are compulsory. Offer one piece so your opponent must take it, and set up a double jump in return.
5. Count before you jump
Before taking, check what your opponent can capture after. A one-for-two trade loses the game.
6. Kings win endgames
A king moves and captures backwards too. Racing one piece to the far row is often worth a pawn.
7. Trade when you are ahead
With more pieces than your opponent, simple one-for-one trades bring you closer to a won ending.
