Speed is how the Gulf plays Spades: four players, two teams of partners, bids, and spades that cut every other suit. Good partners win because they think as one team. Eight habits that help.

1. Bid what you can really take

Count sure tricks: aces, kings with support, and long spades. Do not count on your partner rescuing you.

2. Listen to your partner’s bid

A high bid from your partner means strong cards. Bid a little lower and play to support them.

3. Count the spades

There are 13 spades. Keep track of how many have fallen so you know when your low spade is suddenly a winner.

4. Lead your strong suit

Leading where you hold the ace and king wins tricks before anyone can cut.

5. Don’t waste spades on your partner’s winners

If your partner’s card is already winning the trick, play low.

6. Make a short suit

Getting rid of a whole suit early lets you cut with spades later.

7. Protect the bid first

Once your team has its tricks, play safe. Points come from making the bid, not from extra tricks.

8. Keep the conversation going

Voice chat with your partner is part of the fun (no telling your cards, of course!).
